Our History
Mars Symbioscience (MSS) was established in 2005 as a technology-based health and life sciences business with a focus on delivering evidence-based science.
We have three business units: Mars Plantcare, Mars Veterinary and Mars Botanical. With sustained funding from Mars, Incorporated, MSS acts as an incubator for business ideas generated throughout our segments. For example, we are currently testing MyCocoaPaper products. This project turns the waste from cocoa plants into paper, providing an additional income stream to cocoa farmers. Our ability to bring to market a range of cocoa paper products also creates a real business opportunity for MSS.
We strive to put the Mars Five Principles into action by embracing an entrepreneurial spirit and venturing into new growth areas for Mars, Incorporated.
Our Principles in Action
With our three business units, we are committed to making a difference in human and animal health. Through Mars Veterinary, we provide key insights to dog owners with Wisdom Panel™, our patented DNA testing kit for canines, which unlocks their understanding of the breed(s) that make up their dogs, allowing them to be better pet owners.
With Mars Plantcare and Seramis®, our unique porous clay granules, we provide a natural substrate to grow healthy plants. Having plants inside homes and offices improves indoor air quality, which has a subsequent positive impact on health. At the same time, having plants promotes a sense of well being.
Finally, for Mars Botanical we are committed to make a difference in human health with our cocoa flavanols platform anchored in sound scientific principles. Using our patented Cocoapro® process, our CocoaVia™ brand offers products that allow cocoa flavanols to be enjoyed daily as part of a healthy lifestyle.
We do all of this while striving to make a difference in the communities where we operate and with a vested interest in preserving our planet. For example, through our sustainability efforts in Indonesia we are making a real difference in the lives of the farmers that produce the cocoa beans we use. We have created business models in the areas of tree nurseries and composting, that could create sustainable businesses for our farmers. In addition, more than 1,000 hectares of cocoa trees have been certified by the Rainforest Alliance as a result of our work.
